Why I don’t photograph just one thing
I was told many years ago that I should specialise in just one genre of photography. I ignored that advice.
I think if I’d only been photographing one thing for all these years, I would have become rather bored. Variety keeps me interested, and being interested is a fairly useful starting point when you’re making photographs.
People, animals and a few other things
I’m particularly drawn to people and animals. Families, children, actors, business people, dogs, cats and horses have all spent time in front of my camera.
But I also photograph theatrical performances, commercial projects, products, weddings and events. Sometimes the subject sits still. Sometimes it most definitely doesn’t.
The range is part of what I enjoy. Different subjects bring different challenges, and I like having a reason to think about a photograph in a new way.
The same curiosity behind the camera
Whatever I’m photographing, I’m looking for character, connection and the details that make the subject interesting. And beautiful light, of course.
A commercial brief and a family portrait session have different purposes, but both begin with understanding what the photographs need to say.
If you’ve worked with me for one kind of photography, you might be surprised by what else I do. If you have something in mind, ask. I’m always happy to talk through an idea.
