Family portrait with grown-up children

Families being families

One of the things I’ve always loved about photographing families is that the best pictures are rarely the ones where everyone is sitting perfectly and looking at the camera.

They’re usually the moments in between, when people relax, forget about the photography and start behaving like themselves.

Your family, rather than an idea of one

That’s what I’m looking for in a family session: something with personality that feels like your family, rather than somebody else’s idea of what a family portrait should look like.

Every family has its own way of being together. The expressions, the connections and the little moments are what make the photographs personal. A polished photograph is lovely, but I also want you to recognise yourselves in it.

You don’t need to arrive knowing what to do

Most people aren’t entirely comfortable being photographed. Helping you relax is part of my job. We can take our time, have a conversation and give everyone a chance to settle in.

I’m interested in real expressions, so I would much rather engage with you than simply ask everybody to smile on command.

And yes, occasionally everyone looking at the camera is quite nice too. There’s room for both.

If you’re thinking about a family portrait at Origin Studios in Flaunden, I’d love to hear who you would bring along.
